Hundreds of tourists have resumed visiting Queen Elizabeth national Park after a lull of over one-year, mainly attributed to rumors about insecurity in the area.

Park officials and the management of Mweya Safari Lodge said they had recorded between 100-120 tourists per week in recent weeks, making it the peak of business this year. However, they said this was subject to changing holiday seasons.

“This depends on the season. Right now, we have taken advantage of the holiday season in Europe”, said Richard Hodgson, Mweya’s General Manager.

Ignatius Achoka, the acting Chief Warden, said many guests opt to view animals and other scenic features without staying at any of the two lodges in the park.
Mweya safari Lodge early this year embarked this year embarked on a vigorous campaign to encourage visitors, both Ugandans and foreigners to the park.
Among the guests who visited the lodge over the weekend were six envoys accredited to Uganda and their families.

Wildlife officials and hotel managers hope that the envoys will advise and encourage their nationals to visit Uganda.

The envoys included the Indian High Commissioner, B. Prakash, and ambassadors from Iran, Egypt, Algeria, Russia, Italy and South Africa.
