By Air
Entebbe is served by several air charter companies and is also served by numerous cargo services including, Air France Cargo, German Cargo, Sabena and Dairo Air Services. Entebbe holds the distinction of being Sabena’s largest Cargo hub after New York’s JFK International.
From the International Airport there are taxi, bus and hire cars to Kampala. Many hotels also provide courtesy buses to and from the airport.
Airport Tax
The airport tax is now incorporated in the price of the air ticket for all passengers departing from Entebbe International Airport on international flights.
Various air charter companies will fly to any of the many airstrips around the country and most of the areas worth visiting are accessible by air.
By Road
Getting to the remotest area of Uganda is not only possible, but is usually uncomplicated. Our fast-growing network of over 2,000 km of tarred roads is supplemented by over 6,000 km of high quality murram (dirt) roads, and feeder routes. If driving yourself, it is recommended that drivers take local advice regarding the time a journey may take, and the possible need for four-wheel drive and a tourist map.
Fuel stations are available in all main towns, and on many major routes. However, if driving long distances, or on safari, it is advisable to take spare fuel, and to confirm the location of fuel stations. A good road map is essential
Traffic drives on the left side. The major highways are two lane class 6 roads. Driving in Uganda is quite an experience, and probably the best way to see the country. One however has to be cautious of Pedestrians, Cyclists and Livestock on all roads. Good bitumen roads exist between all major towns. The speed limit is 80kmh (But is rarely enforced)
The major entry point into Uganda by road is from Kenya via either Malaba, or Busia. The journey from Nairobi can be made by car, or bus and takes between 7 and 12 hours. The other frequently used entry point is at Kisoro at the Uganda / Rwanda Border.
While driving in Uganda the following documentation is required at all times:
a) Vehicle registration book
b) Vehicle certificate of Insurance (Heavy fines are imposed for driving an uninsured vehicle)
c) International or Domestic drivers licence
Note: Commercial vehicles not registered in Uganda require a permit to operate in Uganda.
There is an extensive network of minibuses or Matatu’s that will take you to wherever you want to go, but only when all seats in the van are full. They are a quick means of transport, and convenient as they stop and pick up wherever you want them to, just yell “mu-maaso awo,” or “wofuna parking,” and the driver will stop for you. There is a law against overloading, and both drivers, and passengers are liable for the fine. There is also a fleet of “special hire” taxis that carry you to wherever you want. they are substantially more expensive than the matatu’s. They are easily identifiable with a black and white stripes.
CAR HIRE
Both local and international car hire companies are based in Kampala and Entebbe. Drivers require a recognized international drivers license. A full list can be obtained from the Uganda Tourist Board.
TAXIS
Taxis are available at the Airport, and in all main towns. The fare should be confirmed before commencing the journey since these taxi cabs don’t have meters.
By Rail
Uganda Railways Corporation operates passenger services between Kampala and the towns of Jinja, Tororo, Mbale, Soroti, Lira, Gulu and Pakwach. URC has services to Kasese in Western Uganda. .Rail transportation is only for those who have time to spare.
The train journey between Nairobi and Kampala is one not to be missed if you want to see the country side. From Nairobi the train takes 23 hours, and is best done in a group. Costs for a first class sleeper are a reasonable US$75 per person each way and is more than a bargain as it includes a full three course meal. This is recommended as one of the best ways to see the countryside.
